7-ELEVEN IS NOW DELIVERING

7-Eleven and Simply Cups launch Australian first recycling initiatives

30 July 2018

We are proud to announce that our partnership with Simply Cups to help rescue 70 million cups from landfill each year continues to go from strength to strength.

Our new nationwide initiative with Simply Cups collects and recycles plastic straws from our 200 plus recycling stations installed in our stores across Australia.

Our CEO, Angus McKay, said 7-Eleven had a duty to take the first step and revolutionise how the community thinks about recycling.

“We believe we have a responsibility to take the lead and find a solution to plastic ending up in landfill,” he remarked.

“A problem this size requires multiple solutions and we want to drive a behaviour change and help people dispose of their takeaway cups and straws responsibly,” he added.

To encourage Australians to make that change we have launched the rCUP instore, a world first reusable cup made out of six recycled coffee cups. The cup is fully insulated, 100% leak proof and has an easy push to drink mechanism which makes drinking your favourite coffee on the go a breeze.

Rob Pascoe, Founder of Closed Loop’s Simply Cups, is also rallying around Australians to get involved locally as the rCUPs are currently manufactured from the UK program.

“We have a new partnership with a company that has developed cutting-edge technology to recycle plastic waste into a dough-like plastic material that can be moulded into new products including rCUPs, furniture and car park bumpers,” said Pascoe.

“This locally developed technology is the first of its kind in the world and to continue to develop it we need the community’s help to recycle their takeaway cups and plastic straws,” Pascoe added.

We encourage you to visit your local 7-Eleven to recycle your takeaway cups (we accept all brands), or consider purchasing a reusable rCUP to help protect the environment.
